A useful custom packaging quote starts with one clear production specification. You do not need every detail finalized, but a factory needs enough information to identify the material, print, finishing and packing route being priced. Use this checklist to prepare a packaging quotation request that suppliers can review on the same basis.

Illustrative buyer-preparation concept. Final materials, artwork, specifications and project scope are confirmed before production.
1. Name the packaging style and product
Name the package type first: folding carton, cosmetic box, paper gift box, clear PET box, self-adhesive label or another requested component. Then state what will be packed, including the product dimensions, filled weight and orientation when fit or strength matters.
Give the finished length, width and height with the measurement unit, or send an approved dieline. For labels, state the finished label size and application surface. A reference photo helps explain structure, but it does not replace dimensions.
3. Use a packaging quotation checklist
A packaging quotation is built from measurable production inputs. Mark any item that is undecided so the factory knows where a recommendation or confirmation is required.
Product type or packaging style
Product or container dimensions and weight
Finished packaging size, dieline or reference status
Material and thickness if known
Artwork status, printing colors and requested finishing
Order quantity per design, size or SKU
Packing format or label application method
Shipping country, sample need and target timing
4. Separate confirmed details from requests
If artwork is ready, send the production file after first contact and identify every requested finish layer. If it is not ready, share print coverage, brand colors and panel requirements. A finish, material, insert, window or special structure should remain a request until the factory confirms it for the project.
State the quantity per size or artwork version rather than only a combined total. Include sample needs, expected repeat-order pattern if known, packing requirements and the shipping country. These details help separate the production quotation from any later freight discussion.
6. Compare quotations on the same specification
Before comparing suppliers, check that every quotation uses the same finished size, material and thickness, print coverage, finish, quantity and packing basis. If one input changes, ask for the quotation to be revised rather than treating two different specifications as the same price.
7. Check what each quotation includes and excludes
Ask each supplier to identify the production specification, quantity tier, sample or tooling items, packing basis, freight basis and any excluded request separately. This is a buyer-side comparison checklist, not a statement of CHL payment, freight or production terms. Confirm the actual quotation line by line before ordering.
Example custom packaging RFQ
Synthetic example: “Please review a printed folding carton for a skincare bottle. Product size: 40 × 40 × 120 mm; finished box size to be confirmed; paperboard recommendation requested; outside color printing; hot-stamped logo requested; 5,000 units; artwork in progress; shipping country: [country].” Replace every example value with the actual project details before sending.
Yes. Send size, packaging style and quantity first. Artwork can be reviewed later, but final pricing may change if print coverage or finish changes.
Why is shipping country needed?
Shipping country helps review export packing, delivery route and communication expectations for the quote.
Why can two packaging quotations be different?
First check whether both quotations use the same size, material and thickness, print coverage, finishing, quantity, packing and shipping basis. A lower price based on a different specification is not a like-for-like comparison.
